I had a week off of work last week. And I wasn’t backpacking. Which means I got to stay up late and sleep in.

I’m not really a morning person. I’ve been trained to be a morning person, and I do a pretty good job of imitating one. I get used to getting up before the sun, and going to sleep early (in the summer, before the sun goes down).

But when I get a chance to stay up to the wee hours of the night, I love to do it. I get a delightful second wind around 11 pm. The world is quiet and dark, and I don’t have any obligations. No pressure. No timetables. I wake up about 8 hours after I go to sleep, and that’s fine.

I really think if I could get away with being nocturnal, I would. Awake from noon to 4 in the morning. But I can’t do that, because I have a job with day hours.

So I fake being a morning person until I’ve almost convinced myself that it’s true.

But deep inside, I know it’s not.
