I woke up with a definite migraine, so I medicated it first thing, and then did the rest of my morning routine. I didn’t feel very hungry so I didn’t eat. I just sat down and started to write the story that I’d come up with on my hike yesterday. I don’t think it’s actually a story fit for Pulphouse. It’s too literal, probably. Too straightforward. But it’s drawn from things that I’m passionate about, so it fulfills the assignment brief.

I took a break to eat a small breakfast around 10, and then ended up finishing the story by 12:30. Then I decided to prepare to go for a trike ride, because the weather is starting to turn, and I wanted to get outside. I’d drawn from some deep emotions with the story and I really needed to get out of the house.

But first, I needed to close the outside vents that help keep my house cool in the summer, because I actually turned on my furnace today for the first time this season. The house was down to 68 and I decided that was cold enough.

The front tire of the trike needed topping off, because when I filled it after it totally deflated I forgot to spin it, so it deflated a bit overnight and then when I spun it it stopped deflating. So it wasn’t empty again, but it wasn’t full enough to ride on either. I got that done, but when I was flipping the bike right side up again, I bashed my face with the handlebar. I might have a bruise, but I used a soda can as an ice pack, so it might not swell too much.

The weather was cloudy and windy, and I could see rain on the mountains to the north, but I decided to just go for my ride and hope that the rain didn’t catch me. I also brought a poncho in my backpack just in case it did start to rain. When I was just about ready to ride out, I realized that the repair I had made over the winter to the broken piece of metal had not stayed fixed.

I went inside and grabbed my twine and a knife. I wrapped the piece with twine as tightly as I could, with generous amounts of twine. It won’t hold long term, but it did the trick for today. I might just add glue on top of the twine, but it’s a bit cold for it to set outside now.

I rode down the road and then over to the Weiser River Trail. It’s easier to cross 95 there than to use the stop sign, I think. I went all the way down to the end of town, then turned and took the back street over to the library and returned a way overdue DVD. Then I cut back over the to the river trail and then back home again. A good ride.

I stopped at the mailbox and found a package from REI, which surprised me because I hadn’t ordered anything. But it is my birthday tomorrow so I wasn’t too surprised. My sister-in-law had sent me some beautiful buffs and a nice thick Cotopaxi hat.

The ride had left me cold, and a little sweaty, so I got a shower. Then I dithered. I was planning on making the cornflake treats for choir tomorrow, but I just kind of let the time get away from me and then it was time for family zoom. So I didn’t get started on the treats until after 7, which is why I’m posting this a bit late.

I’ll admit, I was a bit afraid of making the treats. It has been a long time since I’ve made them, and I wasn’t sure they were going to turn out the way I expected. But my fears were unfounded. I didn’t get them quite as orange as I wanted to, but the remnants that I ate from the pot and the spoons were exactly how they should be, delicious and crunchy sweet. The green frosting for stems added the perfect touch. I just hope there are enough for everyone at rehearsal tomorrow.
